Glutaric acid is an important organic chemical raw material and intermediate, and its structural formula is HOOC(CH2)3COOH. It is monoclinic columnar crystal or needle crystal (in benzene), usually containing 1 molecule of crystal water. The melting point of anhydrous is 97.5~98℃, and the boiling point is 303℃ (101kPa). Easily soluble in water, absolute ethanol and ether, soluble in benzene, chloroform, and slightly soluble in petroleum ether. poisonous. Mainly used as an initiator for the polymerization of synthetic resins and synthetic rubbers; also used to prepare dimethyl glutarate and diethyl glutarate. The dehydration of glutaric acid can produce glutaric anhydride. When cyclohexanone is oxidized with nitric acid to produce adipic acid, the by-product glutaric acid can be obtained; it can also be obtained by liquid-phase oxidation of cyclopentanone.
